Ebola Outbreak Expands to Sud-Ubangi Province in DRC

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has extended its reach to the northwestern province of Sud-Ubangi, following the confirmation of a new case. Local authorities announced this development on September 10, highlighting the growing concern over the virus's spread in the region.

Sud-Ubangi's acting governor, Jean-Rene Galekwa Vundawe, reported that laboratory tests identified the Bundibugyo ebolavirus in a sample taken from the area. This prompted officials to declare an outbreak in the province, which notably does not share borders with any of the six provinces previously affected by confirmed Ebola cases, including Ituri and North Kivu.

As of September 8, the DRC has documented a total of 6,843 confirmed Ebola cases, with 3,310 fatalities and 1,611 recoveries. The case fatality rate currently stands at a staggering 48.4%. The ongoing outbreak, which was declared in May, has become the largest and deadliest in the country's history, surpassing previous records and ranking as the second-largest globally, following the West African epidemic from 2014 to 2016.

In light of this alarming situation, Governor Galekwa emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance and patient treatment, as well as efforts to disrupt the transmission chains of the virus. Authorities are mobilizing resources to combat the outbreak and prevent further spread, particularly in areas previously considered safe.
