A significant gold loan scam involving fake ornaments has been uncovered at ICICI Bank, amounting to Rs 23 crore across nine branches.
Fraud detected during an internal audit revealed fake gold ornaments used for loans.
Around 159 account holders are implicated in the scam spanning from January 2023 to October 2025.
Investigations are underway to determine the extent of internal control failures and potential collusion.
ICICI Bank is embroiled in a major scandal after a gold loan fraud worth approximately Rs 23 crore was revealed in Nagpur. The discovery has raised significant concerns regarding the bank's verification processes and internal controls, especially in light of the number of branches involved.
The fraudulent activities were uncovered during a routine internal audit of the bank's gold loan portfolio. Auditors identified discrepancies in the collateral pledged by customers, leading to a deeper investigation that revealed many of the ornaments used as security were not genuine gold but counterfeit items. This alarming finding suggests that the fraud was not a one-time occurrence but rather a systematic operation that persisted from January 2023 to October 2025.
Following the audit findings, Dhananjay Ramesh Thite, an employee at the bank's zonal office, filed a formal complaint. In response, the Nagpur Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. Authorities are now focused on understanding how such a significant fraud could go unnoticed for an extended period and whether there were any lapses in internal controls that allowed this to happen.
Preliminary investigations indicate that approximately 159 account holders were able to secure loans by pledging fake jewelry, which should have undergone rigorous verification for purity and weight. The acceptance of these counterfeit ornaments during the valuation process raises serious questions about the bank's operational integrity and the effectiveness of its verification systems. Investigators are also probing the potential involvement of bank staff or authorized valuers, as the approval of loans of this magnitude typically requires thorough validation.
The implications of this incident extend beyond ICICI Bank, raising broader concerns about risk management and due diligence in the gold loan sector. Gold loans are favored by customers due to their quick disbursal and minimal documentation requirements, making robust verification processes crucial. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to identify all parties involved and take strict action against those found culpable, including both borrowers and any insiders who may have facilitated the fraud.
