The Maharashtra government's General Administration Department has sanctioned Rs 1.32 crore for the acquisition of luxury vehicles designated for four members of the Lokayukta office. Each vehicle, specifically the Innova-Hycross (ZX-7S) model, has been budgeted at Rs 33 lakh, raising eyebrows amid the state's ongoing drought crisis.
This decision comes at a time when Maharashtra is grappling with severe drought conditions, with an official declaration of drought affecting 265 of its 358 talukas. The allocation of such substantial funds for luxury vehicles starkly contrasts with recent calls from state ministers for austerity measures to curb public expenditure. Minister Uday Samant has emphasized the need for financial prudence, instructing officials to eliminate lavish practices in official functions.
The Lokayukta panel, which recently welcomed its new members, is headed by former Justice Sunil Shukre and includes judicial figures such as former Justices Surendra Tawde and Suvarna Kevale, along with non-judicial members like former DGP Rashmi Shukla and former IAS officer Om Prakash Gupta. The approval for the vehicle purchase was expedited following their swearing-in, with the General Administration Department announcing a review of vehicle allocations on September 4, the same day administrative approval was granted.
The decision has sparked significant public debate, particularly given the current economic strain on farmers and the broader population due to the drought. Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has urged farmers to cut down on expenses during these challenging times, further highlighting the incongruity of spending on luxury vehicles.
