During a recent visit to London, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted the potential for collaboration between Maharashtra and the United Kingdom in the fintech and green energy sectors. Speaking at the House of Lords, Shinde emphasized the shared democratic values and entrepreneurial spirit that bind the two nations, asserting that the partnership has entered a 'golden era' under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Shinde's remarks came as he received the Commonwealth Public Leadership Award, where he noted the historical ties and the significant presence of the British Indian community, which he described as a 'living bridge' between India and the UK. He pointed out that Maharashtra contributes 14% of India's GDP and attracts 30% of foreign direct investment, positioning it as a major economic powerhouse.
The Deputy Chief Minister underscored the strengths of both Mumbai and London as financial hubs, suggesting that London's fintech expertise could enhance Mumbai's financial landscape. He also mentioned the potential for Scotland's green energy innovations to support Maharashtra's green hydrogen initiatives. Shinde reiterated the government's commitment to achieving 50% of power requirements from clean energy by 2030, showcasing a strong vision for sustainable development.
Shinde's address also included a call for global investors and British businesses to engage in Maharashtra's growth story, particularly in sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and healthcare. He proposed a collaborative strategy for trade, encouraging businesses to 'Design in London and Manufacture in Maharashtra' as a means to strengthen economic ties. Additionally, he announced plans to establish a Global Apex Body to unify Marathi business talent worldwide, further enhancing Maharashtra's economic landscape.
Looking ahead, Shinde outlined transformative infrastructure projects that are set to drive Maharashtra's growth, including major highways and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. He expressed optimism about the future, stating that the government is working diligently to ensure that investment agreements translate into tangible outcomes, thereby fostering a robust economic environment in the state.
