In response to the severe drought affecting 265 talukas across Maharashtra, the state government has announced a substantial relief package totaling ₹7,000 crore. This initiative aims to provide employment support to farmers and laborers, facilitating their recovery from the ongoing crisis. The announcement was made by Bharat Gogavale, the Minister for Employment Guarantee and Horticulture, who emphasized the urgent need for large-scale employment initiatives through the Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The central government has allocated ₹4,420 crore for the relief efforts, with the Maharashtra government committing to cover an additional 40% of the costs. This collaborative funding effort is part of a broader strategy to address the immediate needs of those affected by drought while also seeking long-term solutions to water scarcity. Gogavale outlined a 12-point action plan focused on enhancing employment opportunities for rural workers, particularly in agriculture.
Key components of the plan include prioritizing water conservation projects and infrastructure development, such as the construction of school classrooms, Anganwadis, and roads. The minister highlighted that these initiatives are designed not only to create jobs but also to improve water availability in rural areas, which is critical for agricultural sustainability. Specific measures will include building water storage structures and undertaking desilting activities to enhance water management.
In addition to immediate employment support, the government is introducing special assistance for the cultivation of various fruit crops, including mangoes and cashews. This initiative aims to provide long-term financial stability to farmers who have suffered losses due to the drought. Gogavale reiterated the government's commitment to transforming rural areas through Gram Panchayats, ensuring that the benefits of these programs reach the poorest communities directly.
The announcement comes after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared a significant portion of the state as drought-hit, leading to the cancellation of leaves for all government officials to facilitate relief efforts. Farmers are currently facing substantial losses, with their Kharif crops devastated and uncertainty surrounding the upcoming Rabi season. The government's proactive measures are expected to alleviate some of the hardships faced by these communities in the coming months.
