Delhi Launches Three Underpasses Today to Alleviate Traffic

In a significant infrastructure development, three new underpasses were inaugurated today at Mukarba Chowk in Delhi, aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion in the region. The opening ceremony was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marking a crucial step towards improving connectivity in South Delhi. The underpasses are expected to facilitate smoother travel for motorists heading towards areas like Rohini, Badli, and Jahangirpuri, while also benefiting those using the Outer Ring Road.
The new underpasses are part of a broader initiative that includes the Barapullah Phase-III corridor and the extension of the Modi Mill Flyover to Kalkaji. These projects, with an estimated cost of ₹371 crore, are designed to address the persistent traffic issues faced by commuters in Govindpuri, Kalkaji, and CR Park. The government aims to complete these enhancements within the next two and a half years, ensuring a more efficient transportation network.
The Modi Mill Flyover extension will introduce a 1.5-km-long, six-lane elevated corridor, significantly improving connectivity across South Delhi. Currently, vehicles face heavy traffic when descending from the flyover towards Kalkaji and Nehru Place. The new corridor is expected to provide a faster commute through some of the busiest stretches of the capital, featuring wide carriageways to accommodate increased traffic flow.
In addition to the underpasses, a new flyover at the Savitri Cinema junction is also planned. This junction, known for its heavy traffic, will see the construction of a three-lane, 900-metre-long flyover, enhancing the movement of vehicles from IIT Delhi towards Modi Mill. This dual-carriageway corridor is anticipated to create a more efficient travel route, benefiting both local residents and commuters traveling to and from Faridabad and Noida.
As these projects unfold, the Public Works Department (PWD) is committed to minimizing disruption during construction. Measures such as crash barriers, improved signage, and a new drainage system will be implemented to ensure safety and prevent waterlogging during the monsoon. With the completion of these projects, Delhi aims to significantly enhance its transportation infrastructure, paving the way for a more connected and efficient urban environment.
