Apple has introduced its latest smartwatch models, the Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4, which are now available for pre-order. Both models are equipped with the new S11 chip, which promises enhanced performance and health monitoring capabilities. The Series 12 comes in two sizes, 42mm and 46mm, and features improved optical and electrical heart rate sensors, alongside an upgraded Health Sensing System.

The company claims that these new wearables offer the most accurate heart rate sensing available in a smartwatch, a claim supported by a study involving over 1,000 participants. The watches are designed to measure heart rate every five seconds, with heart rate variability assessed 24 times more frequently than previous models. Additionally, a new feature called the Readiness score, ranging from 0 to 10, provides users with insights into their preparedness for various training loads.

Another significant addition is the Health Age feature, which combines metrics such as VO₂ max, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and sleep patterns to give users an indication of their health relative to their biological age. The watches also include a built-in microphone for Audio Intelligence, which alerts users to important sounds and assists in recalling conversations. The Siri app will now generate summaries of discussions, while Shazam will identify music playing nearby.

Battery life is a key highlight, particularly for the Apple Watch Ultra 4, which offers up to 50 hours of normal use—an increase of eight hours compared to its predecessor. In Low Power Mode, it can last up to 84 hours. The Series 12 provides 24 hours of normal use and 38 hours in Low Power Mode, with outdoor workout battery life improved by 25% to 10 hours. Both models come in various materials and finishes, including new aluminum colors and a return of ceramic options.

The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are set to be available for sale on September 18, with prices starting at $399 for the Series 12 and $799 for the Ultra 4. While Apple emphasizes the advanced health features and performance of these devices, the market will ultimately determine their reception and value in comparison to existing smartwatches.
