On September 29, 2026, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed the Congress Working Committee (CWC), asserting that only the Congress party has the capability to defeat the BJP. He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed this sentiment during a private meeting, suggesting that the BJP recognizes Congress as its primary opponent.
During his 20-25 minute speech, Gandhi emphasized the importance of self-belief among party members. He recounted an encounter with Modi and the Home Minister, where he expressed concerns about their approach. Modi reportedly stated that he was acting in a manner similar to previous Prime Ministers, including Indira Gandhi, to which Gandhi responded by reminding him of her electoral defeat following similar actions.
Gandhi further claimed that Modi and the Home Minister told him, "When we go, you will come," indicating their acknowledgment of Congress's potential resurgence. He encouraged his colleagues to have confidence in their abilities, asserting that even the BJP understands that only Congress can effectively challenge its dominance.
