Air India CEO-designate Tewolde Emphasizes Safety and Profitability

Tewolde Gebremariam, the newly appointed CEO and Managing Director of Air India, has identified safety, operational reliability, and profitability as the primary goals for the airline's future. During his inaugural town hall meeting with over 24,000 employees on September 28, Tewolde acknowledged the significant progress made since Air India's integration into the Tata Group, while also emphasizing that considerable work lies ahead.
In his address, Tewolde expressed gratitude to the workforce for their contributions over the past four years, particularly during the merger with Vistara. He highlighted India's favorable demographics, economic growth, and strategic geographic position as vital factors that will support Air India's expansion. He stated, "If we execute well and remain focused on our customers, Air India can become not only one of the largest airlines in the world but among the very best."
Safety was underscored as a shared responsibility within the organization, with Tewolde urging employees to foster a culture of reporting concerns without hesitation. He emphasized that safety must be at the forefront of every operation, stating, "Everything we do must be safe." Additionally, he called for improvements in operational reliability, aiming for customers to associate Air India with dependable service and timely flights.
Tewolde also addressed the airline's profitability, noting that while external factors have impacted its financial trajectory, enhancing revenue and managing costs are essential. He mentioned ongoing discussions about revenue enhancement initiatives across various sectors, including international networks and cargo operations. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of cost management, encouraging every employee to contribute to savings, which can accumulate significantly in a large organization.
Looking ahead, Tewolde emphasized the need for disciplined expansion, stating that growth must be sustainable and profitable. He reiterated the importance of operating as “one Air India” to streamline operations and enhance customer service. Concluding his address, Tewolde expressed optimism about the airline's future, asserting that with a focus on safety, reliability, and teamwork, Air India has the potential to emerge as a leading global airline.
