The latest insights from OPEC's September Monthly Oil Market Report reveal that total oil consumption for 2023 is estimated at 105.84 million bpd. Looking ahead to 2027, the cartel has raised its expectations, forecasting total demand to reach 108.19 million bpd. This upward revision is particularly pronounced in emerging markets like China and India, where demand growth is set to accelerate significantly.
OPEC's analysis indicates that while Chinese oil demand is projected to grow by a modest 10,000 bpd this year, it is expected to surge by 380,000 bpd in 2027, resulting in a total consumption of 17.28 million bpd. India is anticipated to see an even sharper increase, with demand growth estimated at 400,000 bpd next year, bringing its total consumption to 6.11 million bpd. In contrast, demand in OECD countries is expected to decline by 110,000 bpd this year, although a rebound of 430,000 bpd is anticipated for 2027.
The report underscores that non-OECD nations will account for the majority of the anticipated demand increase, with their combined growth expected to rise from 490,000 bpd in 2026 to an impressive 1.92 million bpd in 2027. Notably, the growth in demand from China, India, and other Asian countries alone will contribute nearly 1.2 million bpd to this surge.
As OPEC prepares for 2027, the demand forecast starkly contrasts with its projections for 2026, indicating an annual growth of approximately 2 million additional barrels per day, predominantly driven by countries outside the OECD. This shift reflects the evolving landscape of global oil consumption, with OPEC's own production expected to rise from 42.2 million bpd in 2026 to 43.9 million bpd in 2027, translating to an increase of about 1.6 million bpd.
