Manipur's Veterinary Department Marks World Rabies Day 2026

On September 28, 2026, the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry in Manipur commemorated World Rabies Day at the Farmers' Training Hall in Sanjenthong. The event was attended by Dr. Rangitabali Waikhom, Secretary of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, who emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among various sectors to combat rabies effectively.
The observance of World Rabies Day was centered around the global theme 'Stronger Together'. Dr. L Arunkumar Singh, the Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, presided over the program, which also featured Dr. Laishram Gojen Singh and Dr. RK Rosie as guests of honor. The speakers highlighted the importance of a unified approach involving veterinary services, health authorities, and local communities to prevent rabies.
Dr. Waikhom pointed out that achieving rabies prevention requires more than just the efforts of the veterinary or health sectors alone. She advocated for the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health. Key strategies discussed included dog vaccination, responsible pet ownership, public awareness campaigns, and timely post-exposure treatments to work towards a rabies-free Manipur by 2030.
Dr. Singh noted that the department provides anti-rabies vaccines free of charge at all veterinary hospitals and dispensaries throughout the year. He reiterated that rabies is entirely preventable with timely vaccination, stressing the importance of community engagement in vaccination efforts. A technical session was also conducted to educate attendees about rabies in both humans and animals, along with preventive measures.
In addition to the main event, various awareness programs and anti-rabies vaccination camps were organized across different districts and at the State Veterinary Hospital in Sanjenthong. These initiatives aim to enhance public knowledge and encourage proactive measures against rabies, ensuring the safety of both humans and animals in the region.
