Maharashtra Cancels Leaves for 11 Departments Amid Drought

On September 28, the Maharashtra government announced the cancellation of leaves for officers and employees from 11 departments tasked with drought management. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that these personnel are required to report for field duty to assess the damage to crops caused by the ongoing drought conditions.
Currently, approximately 75% of Maharashtra is facing drought-like scenarios, with soybean crops being among the most adversely affected. In response to the rainfall deficit, the state government declared a drought in 265 of its 358 talukas on Saturday and introduced several relief measures. These include restructuring crop loans, offering land revenue concessions, and providing subsidies on power bills.
Minister Bawankule is currently on an assessment tour in Arati village, located in Hingoli district, where he is evaluating the impact of the drought. He mentioned that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has formed a cabinet sub-committee to assess the situation, with members visiting affected areas to evaluate crop losses. The government plans to review available assistance under crop insurance and the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to determine the higher eligible benefits, subject to applicable provisions.
Bawankule cautioned that any financial assistance would be contingent upon the consolidation of assessment reports, stressing that premature announcements of relief could potentially overlook some farmers in need. During his visit, tensions arose when Congress workers halted the minister’s convoy, presenting a memorandum that demanded immediate relief for farmers and accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner regarding the SIR process.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is expected to finalize its relief strategy based on the comprehensive evaluations from the ongoing assessments. Stakeholders are urged to remain informed about the developments as the situation evolves and more detailed reports emerge from the field.
