Solapur District Implements Safety Measures for Pilgrims
In an effort to enhance safety for pilgrims, Solapur district is taking significant steps against illegal sand mining and drowning incidents.

The Solapur district administration is launching a series of safety initiatives aimed at protecting pilgrims visiting the sacred town of Pandharpur. With the recent Ashadi wari pilgrimage attracting over 32 lakh devotees, the local government is prioritizing measures to prevent drowning incidents in the Chandrabhaga river, which has historically been a site of tragedy during the pilgrimage season.
The Ashadi wari, which occurs annually in July, is a significant event for devotees of Lord Vithoba, drawing participants from across Maharashtra and beyond. This year, the pilgrimage saw a notable rise in attendance, with 32 lakh warkaris making the journey, compared to 27 lakh in 2022. The administration's proactive approach includes mapping a two-and-a-half-kilometer stretch of the riverbed using sonar technology to identify and secure deeper areas prone to drowning.
District Collector Karthikeyan S. announced plans to construct a snana kunda, or bathing tank, which will be completed by late 2027. This facility aims to provide a safe environment for pilgrims to bathe, channeling and filtering river water into the tank. Additionally, AI-enabled cameras will be deployed to monitor the river and prevent drowning incidents. The crackdown on illegal sand mining will also be intensified to reduce hazards associated with the riverbed.
The past few years have seen a decline in drowning incidents during the Ashadi wari, with fatalities dropping from nine in 2022 to just two this year. The administration has trained over 150 volunteers, including women, in rescue operations, who will be on standby during major pilgrimage events. This increased vigilance is credited with saving lives and ensuring a safer experience for all attendees.
As the pilgrimage tradition continues to thrive, the Solapur district's initiatives reflect a commitment to safeguarding the lives of devotees. With the temple corridor project underway, the local government aims to improve infrastructure and accessibility, ensuring that the spiritual journey remains both meaningful and safe for all pilgrims in the years to come.
