In a rare occurrence, senior bureaucrats in Jammu and Kashmir have formally opposed a resolution aimed at restoring statehood, sending letters to the Assembly Speaker just hours before the discussion was set to begin. The letters, authored by Chief Secretary Atal Duloo and Law Secretary Achal Sethi, argue that the matter is currently sub judice, thereby preventing the Assembly from deliberating on it.
The resolution for statehood, introduced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, had been admitted by the Assembly three days prior to this bureaucratic intervention. Abdul Rahim Rather, the Speaker of the Assembly, remarked that such interference from the bureaucracy is unprecedented and undermines the authority of the legislative body. He emphasized that the letters were sent without the approval of the relevant minister, which he deemed inappropriate.
Omar Abdullah, who also serves as the Law Minister, stated he was unaware of the bureaucrats' letters until informed by the Assembly Secretariat.
