In a significant political development in Karnataka, the opposition parties, BJP and JD(S), have opted not to participate in an all-party delegation aimed at securing drought relief from the central government. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has accused these parties of feigning concern for farmers while neglecting their welfare. He has sought a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials to discuss the Kasturirangan Report concerning the Western Ghats and the ongoing drought situation.
The refusal from the opposition comes amidst rising tensions over drought management in the state. Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka stated that while the BJP is open to discussions regarding the Kasturirangan Report, they will not attend the meeting for drought relief, citing a lack of assistance from the government. He emphasized that the current administration has failed to support farmers adequately, leading to their decision.
JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy questioned the necessity of an all-party delegation, suggesting that it would only lead to unnecessary expenses. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such a delegation, arguing that the government should act independently to address the drought crisis. In response, Shivakumar reiterated that the opposition's absence reflects their lack of genuine interest in farmers' issues, insisting that he will take necessary actions to safeguard their interests regardless of their participation.
Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara highlighted the importance of a united front, noting that the BJP holds power at the national level. He stated that their involvement in the delegation could enhance Karnataka's position when presenting its case to the central government. Parameshwara emphasized that drought is not a partisan issue, but a matter of public concern that requires collective responsibility among all parties.
Looking ahead, Karnataka is set to submit its final memorandum regarding drought-related losses to the central government in the first week of October. Earlier this month, the state estimated these losses at ₹18,748.23 crore, with the monsoon season concluding on September 30. The government aims to finalize its report and present it to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support during this challenging time.
