In a significant development for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), former Indian bowler Mohit Sharma is set to join the team's coaching staff as the new bowling coach for the upcoming IPL season. This announcement was made by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, who highlighted Sharma's previous contributions as a player and expressed confidence in his coaching abilities.
Mohit Sharma, who has had a storied career in the Indian Premier League (IPL), last played for the Delhi Capitals. He has two prior stints with CSK, where he showcased his skills over four seasons. His appointment comes as he takes over from Eric Simmons, with the decision being influenced by head coach Zaheer Khan's recommendation. Viswanathan noted that further coaching staff will also be recruited based on Khan's suggestions in the near future.
At 38 years old, Mohit has participated in 120 IPL matches, claiming 134 wickets. His recent tenure with the Gujarat Titans saw him emerge as a key wicket-taker, where he secured 41 wickets across two seasons. Mohit's career in the IPL peaked in 2014 when he won the Purple Cap for being the highest wicket-taker while playing for CSK, a testament to his effectiveness on the field.
Sharma announced his retirement from professional cricket in December 2022, reflecting on his journey from representing Haryana to playing for India and in the IPL. His emotional retirement post acknowledged the support from the Haryana Cricket Association and his coaches, particularly Anirudh Sir, who played a pivotal role in his career. Mohit's international career includes 26 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and eight T20 Internationals, where he took 31 and six wickets, respectively.
