South Africa has officially named an 18-member preliminary squad for the first Test match against Australia, set to commence on October 9 as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025/27 series. The selection is crucial for both teams as they aim for a spot in the ICC World Test Championship 2027 Final.
Kagiso Rabada, a key player for the Proteas, has been included in the squad despite ongoing recovery from a right hamstring injury that has sidelined him from recent matches, including the current ODI series against Australia. The team will, however, miss the services of Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka, and Ottneil Baartman, who are also recovering from injuries. Rabada's fitness will be assessed during an intra-squad practice game before the Test series, as indicated by head coach Shukri Conrad.
The squad features notable returns, including Anrich Nortje, who last played a Test in 2023. His experience will be vital for the bowling attack.
