Arrest of Ashiq Ali in Nimisha Thakuria's Death Case

In a significant development, Ashiq Ali, a 26-year-old man, has been arrested in Guwahati in connection with the tragic death of 22-year-old Nimisha Thakuria, a student at Gauhati University. The police have registered a case against him under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which include serious charges such as wrongful confinement, grievous hurt, gang rape, and murder. The incident has sparked outrage and demands for justice from the local community.
Nimisha's family reported that she made a distressing phone call to her mother around 2 AM on Saturday, claiming she had been assaulted. Her father, Deep Thakuria, expressed concern over the lack of communication following that call. Nimisha was discovered later at a homestay in the Dharapur-Garal area, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital after being taken from Garal Primary Health Centre.
The circumstances surrounding her stay at the homestay are under scrutiny, as it was revealed that she had told her family she would be spending the night at the university hostel with friends. Instead, she was found at a homestay with Ashiq Ali, who allegedly claimed that she had hanged herself. The police are currently investigating the validity of his statement, with DCP Balin Deuri stating that the truth will emerge through the ongoing investigation.
Further complicating the case, it has been reported that the homestay where Nimisha and Ashiq stayed had not conducted proper identity verification for guests. The premises have since been sealed, and the owner along with three employees are being questioned. Evidence is being collected by CID and forensic teams to ascertain the events leading to Nimisha's death. The homestay was reportedly rented for a substantial amount, raising questions about compliance with safety regulations.
In the wake of this incident, protests erupted in the local community, with residents blocking roads and demanding a thorough investigation. Some protesters have controversially linked the case to allegations of “love jihad.” Nimisha's last rites were conducted on Saturday evening after her family received her body post-mortem. The investigation continues as authorities seek to uncover the full truth behind this tragic event.
