Rescue Operations Intensify for 12 Missing After Nepal Avalanche

Rescue teams have intensified their efforts to locate 12 individuals missing following a tragic avalanche on Mount Himlung in Nepal, which resulted in the deaths of at least two climbers. The incident occurred at a base camp where climbers were preparing for the autumn climbing season, which typically attracts foreign clients. As of now, at least 10 people have been successfully rescued from the site, while the search continues for the remaining individuals who were swept away by the avalanche. The bodies of the deceased were airlifted to Kathmandu on Monday and taken to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for identification.
Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, confirmed that the rescue operations are being conducted by a dedicated team of eight mountain guides. He noted that the search for the 14 expedition workers who remain unaccounted for is ongoing, with efforts continuing until dusk each day. The victims of this disaster are all Nepali nationals, highlighting the local impact of this tragic event.
The avalanche comes amidst a backdrop of severe weather warnings issued by the government, which has been grappling with the aftermath of heavy rainfall leading to flooding and landslides in the Manang district. Reports indicate that 21 other fatalities occurred across the country due to various weather-related incidents from Thursday to Sunday, with five more individuals reported missing.
As Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods that occurred in August, which resulted in over 1,400 deaths, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has reported that approximately 5,500 people remain unaccounted for. The ongoing situation underscores the pressing need for effective disaster management strategies as researchers link these events to long-term climate change impacts, including glacier retreat and geological instability.
