India Participates in SCO National Coordinators' Meeting in Islamabad

India is actively participating in the ongoing three-day meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) National Coordinators in Islamabad, which commenced on September 28, 2023. The Indian delegation is led by Alok Dimri, the National Coordinator, and this marks a notable diplomatic engagement following a period of tension between India and Pakistan.
The SCO, which includes member countries such as Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, and China, is convening to prepare for the upcoming Council of Heads of State summit scheduled for August 2027 in Islamabad. The meeting is chaired by Pakistan’s National Coordinator, Mohammad Faisal, who is focusing on enhancing cooperation and coordination among member states.
During the meeting, discussions will cover a wide array of topics related to SCO cooperation, including the program of activities under Pakistan's chairmanship. Pakistan's Foreign Office has stated that the theme for its chairmanship is “Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity.” This theme emphasizes improving connectivity, fostering innovation, and strengthening economic ties and people-to-people interactions among member states.
The significance of this meeting is underscored by the fact that it is India's first official visit to Islamabad since the brief conflict last year. The Indian delegation's presence is seen as a step towards rebuilding diplomatic relations. The meeting will serve as a platform for member states to coordinate their efforts and prepare for high-level engagements during Pakistan’s chairmanship.
Looking ahead, the SCO National Coordinators' meeting is expected to set the groundwork for various activities leading up to the 2027 summit. As Pakistan takes on the chairmanship, it aims to work closely with all member states to advance shared priorities and strengthen cooperation within the SCO framework.
