US President Donald Trump has openly criticized the United Kingdom's decision to grant bail to five men arrested in connection with an alleged plot to attack RAF Fairford, a key airbase utilized by the US military. Speaking from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump expressed his surprise at their release, asserting that he would not have allowed it. He suggested that their actions might have ties to Iran, although he refrained from elaborating on the specifics of his knowledge regarding the situation.
The five suspects, all British nationals aged between 23 and 25 from the London area, were detained early Sunday morning after a local farmer reported suspicious activity involving three large white vans and a group of masked individuals running into a field near the base. Armed officers from Gloucestershire Police swiftly apprehended the men in the Whelford area, approximately one mile from RAF Fairford. Initially arrested under the Explosives Act, the investigation was later taken over by counter-terrorism police, who charged them with preparing for a terrorist act.
In response to the incident, about 85 households were evacuated from the vicinity of the vehicles, and a 400-meter cordon was established as a precautionary measure. Laurence Taylor, the head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed that despite their release, the suspects remain under investigation. He noted that they are subject to strict conditions regarding their movements and interactions with others.
Taylor emphasized that investigators are exploring all angles of the case, including the potential involvement of foreign states, either directly or indirectly. This scrutiny follows heightened tensions surrounding RAF Fairford, which has been a strategic base for US military operations, particularly against Iran. The UK government had previously stated its readiness to protect the base following warnings from Iran's Revolutionary Guards about potential attacks on US forces.
