2027 ICC Cricket World Cup to Feature 14 Teams in Africa

The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup is set to take place from October 4 to November 21, marking its return to African soil after 24 years. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will co-host the tournament, which will feature 14 teams competing in a newly structured format.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) will unveil the tournament schedule on October 1, 2026, coinciding with the qualification cut-off date of September 30. This announcement will also open registrations for the World Cup ticket ballot, allowing fans to secure their chance to attend the matches.

As of now, 10 teams have secured direct qualification, including co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. The remaining four spots will be filled through a qualification tournament. The teams currently in direct qualification positions are India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Notably, the West Indies, two-time World Cup champions, will need to compete in the qualifying tournament, as they currently rank outside the direct qualification spots.

The format for the 2027 World Cup has been revamped to accommodate the expanded number of teams. The tournament will begin with a Super Series involving the three lowest-seeded teams, followed by a group stage with 12 teams divided into two groups. The top teams from each group will progress to a Super 7 stage, leading to the semi-finals and ultimately the final match, where the champion will be crowned.

With matches scheduled across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, local reports suggest that Johannesburg's Wanderers Stadium may host the final. The ICC's announcement on October 1 will provide crucial details regarding match schedules, venues, and ticketing, setting the stage for what promises to be a landmark tournament in cricket history.
