Bangkok has been declared a disaster zone following unprecedented rainfall that inundated the city over the weekend. Nearly 320mm (12.6 inches) of rain fell within two to three days, flooding homes, businesses, and major roads. Authorities have initiated evacuations, relocating thousands of residents to safer areas as they navigate through waist-deep water in many neighborhoods.
The flooding has been described as one of the worst in years by local residents. Sunisa Manora, a resident of Pathum Thani, expressed her distress, stating that major roads are impassable and public transportation has come to a halt. Many have reported difficulties in accessing basic necessities, with food delivery services suspended due to the flooding. Reports indicate that some stores have run out of supplies as residents rushed to stock up on essentials.
In response to the crisis, city officials have mobilized relief efforts, including mobile kitchens and boats to provide meals to those affected. As of now, over 5,900 individuals have been moved to 234 evacuation centers, while more than 80,000 remain trapped in their homes due to the rising waters. The Interior Minister has emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the need for continued support as rain persists.
The flooding has not only disrupted daily life but is also projected to have significant economic repercussions. Experts estimate that the damage could reach at least 11 billion baht ($327 million), with a potential decrease in GDP growth by 0.3 percentage points this year. The wholesale and retail sectors in Bangkok and the eastern region are expected to bear the brunt of the economic impact, while industries and agriculture may face challenges elsewhere.
