In a tragic incident in Nepal's Baglung district, a government ward office building collapsed into the Daram River following a landslide triggered by persistent heavy rainfall. The collapse, captured on video, shows the hillside giving way rapidly, leading to the building's descent into the river, although the authenticity of the footage remains unverified by independent sources.
Local authorities have reported that the recent landslides, which occurred over the weekend, have resulted in at least 10 fatalities, with one individual still unaccounted for. Superintendent of Police Phanindra Prasai indicated that four deaths were recorded in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, while five fatalities occurred in Nisikhola Rural Municipality on Sunday alone.
Rescue teams, including security personnel and support from a Nepali army helicopter, have been dispatched to the affected areas to assist in recovery efforts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has reported that the severe weather conditions have led to a total of 21 deaths, with five individuals missing and several others injured due to the heavy rains, floods, and landslides that have persisted from September 24 to 27.
The landslides have had a devastating impact, accounting for 14 of the reported deaths and all five missing persons, while floods and heavy rainfall have also contributed to the loss of life. This recent disaster adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Nepal, which is still recovering from catastrophic floods in August that resulted in over 1,400 deaths and left nearly 6,000 people missing.
As rescue operations continue, the situation remains critical, with authorities urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant. The government is expected to assess the damage and provide necessary support to the affected communities in the coming days.
