The uncrewed rocket, towering at 40 stories, launched from SpaceX's Starbase facility in Brownsville, Texas, at approximately 7:46 a.m. CT. This mission marks a significant achievement for the company, which has invested over $15 billion in the development of the Starship program.
The Starship rocket consists of a Super Heavy booster and the main upper-stage vessel. During its ascent, one of the engines failed, leading to initial concerns regarding the mission's success. However, a spokesperson from SpaceX later confirmed that the mission would continue to orbit, and the vehicle successfully achieved this critical milestone.
This flight represents the 14th launch of the Starship program and is particularly notable as it is the first time the rocket has reached orbit. The mission is also significant for its operational release of satellites, as SpaceX aims to utilize Starship for more frequent launches of its Starlink satellites and to facilitate future NASA missions to the moon.
The Starship was designed to complete six orbits around Earth during a planned 10-hour journey, ultimately splashing down in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile. Until now, all prior test flights since 2023 had been limited to suborbital trajectories.
